Who is in your Community?

There are many organizations within each community that can serve as partners for an after school program for homeless students.

Homeless Shelters

The HUD definition for "shelters" includes all emergency shelters and transitional shelters for the homeless, including domestic violence shelters, residential programs for runaway/homeless youth, and any hotel/motel/apartment voucher arrangements paid by a public/private agency because the person or family is homeless.

School District Resources

Under the McKinney-Vento Act, each district must have a liaison who works with homeless students to provide transportation and other basic resources. Some districts may have funded programs with a full time staff person. Others may only have systems in place to comply with the Federal law.

Community and Faith-based Programs

Many community and religious organizations donate time and resources regularly to help the underserved community. They may be willing to sponsor your program, provide a site for the program, or volunteer time to mentor students.

Non-profit Institutions and Charaties

Other non-profits and charities in your community with a vision to help underserved populations may be excited to partner in such a unique arts program.

Local and National Businesses

Sponsorships with local and nationwide business can provide the after school arts program with monetary sources, free supplies, media exposure, while giving a business an opportunity to really make a difference in a child's life.
