"What strikes me today, as we stand here, is a sense of the universal. Young at Art Museum and Library embraces everyone, yet, evokes a poetic sense of belonging and a provocative point of view." - Margi Nothard; Project Designer, President|Glavovic Studio Inc
Building on more than 20 years of creative educational experiences and having served over 1.5 million visitors, Young At Art is now mounting its most important ‘exhibition’ to date: The NEW Young At Art Museum. This groundbreaking model for museums nationwide bridges the gap between an adult art museum and a children's museum, transforming the way children and families use art to learn, share experiences and shape a community.
PROJECT GOALS
To establish a museum and library complex whose synergistic relationship between art and reading creates a unique learning experience for families of Broward County, South Florida and beyond.
To create an art museum for children, a groundbreaking model for museums nationwide that bridges the gap between an adult art museum and a children’s museum.
To transform the way children and families use art to share experiences and shape a new community, developing a new generation that will become tomorrow’s patrons, advocates and supporters of the arts.
PROJECT DETAILS
The 55,000 sq ft Gold-LEED certified educational arts complex is currently being built on 11.7 acres of land contributed by Broward County and includes a Broward County Library. The New YAA is being constructed by Pirtle Construction with Spillis Candela of Miami and Glavovic Studios of Fort Lauderdale as the project architects. The award-winning design duo, Peter and Sharon Exley of architureisfun in Chicago, have designed the amazing exhibition spaces.
Projected to serve 500,000 children and adults during its first year, the New YAA will feature four permanent galleries - CultureScapes, GreenScapes, WonderScapes and ArtScapes - where visitors engage in an exceptional range of authentic, arts-based educational experiences, developing a new generation of tomorrow's patrons, advocates and supporters of arts-based education; a Young At Art Institute that presents a curriculum in state-of-the-art equipped studios: painting/drawing, ceramics, printmaking, digital/ b+w photography and 4D video design; a cutting-edge Teen Center for YAA's 300+ volunteer corp; a Traveling Exhibition Gallery presenting national interactive exhibitions; and Artist-in-Residence Studios/Installations that includes Kenny Scharf, Pablo Cano, Edouard Duval Carrie, Kenichi Yokono, Leonel Matheu, who, among others, are collaborating with museum designers and fabricators to infuse their spirit and artful voice throughout the exhibition spaces.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The $21.5 million project has to date secured $11.5 million in public and private funding with an additional $2 million pending from private donors and $2.5 million from government sources. The project was awarded a $500,000 Knight Arts Initiative Challenge Grant from The John S. and James L.
