Created by Chisseko Kondowe, an Artist
in Residence at Young At Art, this work entitled "Kito's
Dreams" is an example of the art form called "batik".
Batik is a "resist" technique that involves painting
with melted paraffin and beeswax on fabric so that it penetrates
specific portions. The waxed fabric is then dipped into or painted
with dyes, resisting waxed areas. After repeated waxing and dying,
the wax is removed by ironing the fabric between papers.
Batik is truly a magical experience with a translucent quality unlike any other art form. During the process, the artwork seems to take on a life of its own. The element of surprise and spontaneity contributes to the beauty of batik. See if you can put the batik below back together!
