The Young At Art Institute is a 7,500 sq. ft. wing of our new museum featuring the finest, state-of-the-art studios for ceramics, printmaking, cartooning and film, digital and darkroom photography, mixed media, drawing and painting.
The Institute’s curriculum, delivered by professional and visiting guest artists, introduces the elements of art and the principles of design through an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Age-appropriate art-making experiences for children, teens and adults are interwoven with art appreciation, history, culture and criticism. Our meaningful structure encourages students of all ages to grow through engagement with the arts, with exploration of a variety of exciting art mediums, learn from our team of qualified art instructors in professionally equipped studios, build self esteem through accomplishment and share their work at Young At Art Institute exhibit showcases throughout the year.

CERAMICS | Ages 5-7
Learn the basics of hand building-wedging, coils and slabs to create unique ceramic sculptures.
DRAWING & PAINTING | Ages 5-7, 8-12
Develop new skills and techniques through a variety of media: acrylic, tempera, watercolor, ink, charcoal and pastel.
PAINT & PRINT | Ages 5-7, 8-12
Learn a variety of printmaking techniques including silk screening, collograph and relief. Develop your painting skills as you work with various media.
MIXED MEDIA | Ages 3-5, 5-7
Mix and match in this super sampler class including ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking and more.
DIGITAL CARTOONING | Ages 8-12
Join cartoonist Marcos Rivera for this intensive cartooning class. Learn how to create digital art and animation using iPads as the primary media. All digital cartooning uses Rob Cabrera’s curriculum.
ADVANCED DIGITAL CARTOONING | Ages 10-12
Take your digital cartoons to the next level. Learn advance techniques in cartooning and animation using the iPad. Prerequisite: Digital Cartooning with Rob Cabrera/ Marcos Rivera.
DARKROOM AND DIGITAL PHOTO | Ages 8-12
Shoot, process, develop and print 35mm _ lm in the photo lab. Learn to use Photoshop in the Digital Art Studio to alter images.
CERAMICS AND POTTER'S WHEEL | Ages 8-12
Develop hand building and sculpture techniques and learn the basics of wheel throwing and glazing.
HOMESCHOOL ART | All Ages
Forge new ground as you integrate art across the core curriculum of Math, Science, Social Studies and Language. Minimum 5 students. Choose a weekday morning, once a week, 10am-11:30am.
INTRO TO CERAMICS & THE POTTER’S WHEEL | Ages 13-17
Learn the fundamentals of hand building and wheel throwing to create functional vessels and sculptural creations. Glazing techniques will be introduced and explored.
CERAMICS & SCULPTURE | Ages 13-17
Explore the processes and techniques of raku and pit _ ring, surface decoration and glazing. Work with clay and other mixed media to experiment with sculpture with a focus on the human body. Students will discuss and decide project theme(s) for the session. Prerequisite: Ceramics and Potter’s Wheel
DRAWING & PAINTING | Ages 13-17
Develop awareness and perception as you strengthen drawing and painting skills. Learn to apply the techniques of negative space, proportion and value as you draw and paint live models, still lifes, landscapes and other creative assignments across dry and wet media.
INTRO TO PRINTMAKING | Ages 13-17
Develop the skills to create a woodcut and linocut relief, solar, etched plexiglass and sugar lift intaglio plates. Build your own creative voice through a series of prints across media.
INTRO TO PHOTOGRAPHY | Ages 13-17
Explore the basics of photo composition, shooting and developing 35mm _ lm, and the techniques of digital photography. Learn to process negatives, operate the enlarger and mix chemicals in the YAA Darkroom.
PHOTO II & DARKROOM EXPERIMENTATION | Ages 13-17
Develop your photographic style and learn contemporary, experimental darkroom techniques such as anthrotypes, bleaching and sandwiching negatives. Print onto silkscreens to transfer photos to clay and fabric. Prerequisite: Intro to Photo or Darkroom & Digital Photo
DIGITAL ART | Ages 13-17
Take your art to the next level in our Digital Art Studio. Learn from professional digital artist, Karen Nir, to design unique digital compositions using Adobe software. Manipulate photos, images, text, filters and layers to create a series of one-of-a-kind images.
DIGITAL CARTOONING | Ages 13-17
Let the iPad be your tool to design professional cartoons and comics using the latest industry standard apps. This course taught by professional cartoonists Rob Cabrera and Marcos Rivera will begin with traditional drawing techniques and move to the iPad for advanced coloring and animation.
ADVANCED DIGITAL CARTOONING | Ages 13-17
Students who have taken digital cartooning will be challenged in this advanced course in character development and creating a story with additional characters. Advanced applications will be used and independent projects developed. Pre-requisite: Digital Cartooning with Rob Cabrera/ Marcos Rivera.
CERAMICS & POTTER’S WHEEL
Choose your track in hand building or wheel throwing led by our professional artists in our state-of-the-art ceramics studio. Beginners to Advanced students welcome.
Whether you are a 35mm or digital photographer, you’ll be challenged by this class to merge genres. Learn how to compose, light, frame and more to achieve desired results. Students will take two photo fieldtrips and create a hardbound photo book.
DRAWING & PAINTING
Experience the freedom of drawing and painting still life and landscapes at your own pace. Institute instructors will teach you how to use a variety of dry and wet media and help you apply color theory, light and shadow, and negative space to produce new and exciting works of art.
